Week #6: 2-1 Readers Response

Assignment 2-1 Read the two articles Middle School Science Teachers’ Confidence and Pedagogical Practices of New Literacies and Using Social Networking Sites to Enhance Teaching and Learning in the Science Classroom and share your Reader Response thoughts on the blog.

According to to the articles Middle School Science Teachers’ Confidence and Pedagogical Practices of New Literacies and Using Social Networking Sites to Enhance Teaching and Learning in the Science Classroom, new literacies skills should be common in classrooms using ICTs in a creative and productive way to enhance teaching and learning. With the evolution of ICTs, inquirely learning can be facilitated on different levels. However it is important for teachers to have the responsibility to integrate ICTs into the curriculum while being proficient in ICTs while providing meaningful educational ways in the learning context. According to Leu, "The  traditional  definition  of  literacy  refers  to  the  ability  to read,  write,  comprehend,  and  communicate  through  languages.  With  the  advancement  of  computer  and networking technologies,  the  definition  of  literacy  has  evolved  to include  the  ability  to  use  digital  technologies  to  ‘‘identify questions,  locate  information,  evaluate  the  information, synthesize  information  to  answer  questions,  and  communicate  the  answers  to  others’’  (Leu  et  al.2004,  p.  1572). Based on the study conducted by Hsu, Wang, and Runco, the results reflected that new literacies fluency lies in the proficiency of technological skills, cognitive skills, and literacy skills. In addition, results showed that teachers are in need of strategies to apply ICTs to suport student learning. With the help pf professional development, the design of the PD should focus on how teachers can connect the curriculum to ICTs in classrooms and how they can use ICTs skillfully and confidently in classrooms. Also, implementing social media sites and ICTs create a meaningful learning experience and cultivate students new literacy skills inside and outside the classroom. For instance with a site known as Edmodo, allows students to communicate with each other about assignments, group collaborations, class notes, and even cater to students who have missed class and need more information on what assignments to do. Students are able to exhange ideas and support their inquiry of the topic while teachers are able to understand the students' ways learning and thinking. Overall, technology integration in classrooms can meet the needs of the different learning styles that students have while being supportive by the neccessary ICT skills that teachers need.
