Week #5: Assignment #1 Gamestar Mechanic Reflection
Assignment #1: Create an account with Gamestar Mechanic or Flowlab. Examine and explain how other teachers are using games in classrooms, particularly ELA.
Gamestar Mechanic is a game and community designed to teach kids the principles of game design and systems thinking in a highly engaging environment. Gamestar mechanic is used by teachers where it caters to ages 7-14 years old but is open to all ages.The features in Gamestar make it effective for students to play their game as home and be flexible to play in educational settings as well. Designing games in Gamestar builds on:
1) Solving problems skills
2) Motivation for STEAM Learning
3) Effectively implementing ICTs in classroom related curriculum and lesson plans
4) Writing and storytelling in relation to ELA content area.
With games enhancing motivation, fun, and engagement within and outside the classroom, it can be integrated into a design of digital-media literacies. With students being able to design games, it leads to an increase motivation for STEAM while fostering the new skills of implementing ICTs in classrooms. Through gaming students learn how to think analytically and how to experiment and text theories. Some examples teachers are implementing Gamestar in their classroom includes creative writing opportunities, where students write a creative writing piece to unlock the next section of the story. In addition, teachers have integrated spelling words, word walls, and vocabulary words by using Gamestar for students.
