Week #3: Assignment #2 Minds-on “New Literacies Definition and Components”

Learning Task and Assignment #2 Minds-on “New Literacies Definition and Components”
  1. Watch the video and the PPT slideshow (http://www.slideshare.net/skwang/new-literacies-elearn-2010-hsu-v2) and answering the following questions
  • Which ideas from the video reflect what the ELA teachers you interviewed are currently doing to integrate technology with their literacy instruction?
The ELA Teachers that I interviewed are currently using ICTs for researching information and synthesizing information to answer questions which relates to the ideas from the video. With using the search engine when it comes it literacy instruction, it has been effective in the classrooms in order to locate information. With integrating technology with their literacy instruction, students are able to communicate to others by using Google Documents on a shared documents during group projects and using Skype to communicate as well during group projects when completing assignments outside of class.

  • How can you help change their instructional practices to include the use of technology and the Internet in their literacy and content-area curriculum?
Some instructional practices I would change to include the use of technology and internet in their literacy and content-area curriculum includes using blogs to enhance social networking as a tool and incorporating movie editing. With these tools, especially when it comes to the content area curriculum science, it will allow students to communicate information with classmates in terms of hypothesizing when it comes to their science project and evaluate each other's answers. In addition, with movie making in relation to the science content area-curriculum, students can showcase the methods they used, testing their hypothesis, recording data, and drawing conclusions. With Movie editing, videos can be created where students can incorporate engaging presentations, create "How to" videos, create video reports, or digital story telling.

  • What professional development and/or resources will they need in order to make these changes?
With technology evolving so fast, it's important for teachers to keep up with the trends and support the efforts in the classroom and produce better learner outcomes when it comes to using ICTs in classrooms. Therefore resources like 'Global Digital Citizen Foundation' provide alot of teacher resources  towards helping understand and keep up with technology trends. In addition, using 'My Paperless Classroom' grades K-5 shares ideas on how to incorporate technology in the classroom while following the literacy instruction guidelines thanks to integration specialist Sam Patterson.
  • What ideas do you have for grouping students so they will have equal access to technology in the classroom?
In order to allow students to have equal access to technology in the room I would rotate students throughout different lessons pertaining to literacy instruction to different utilizing ICTs so that students can get familiar with the different ICTs. I would also group students based on their skills when it comes to their knowledge of the ICT so that a student who is very familiar with a certain ICT can be paired with a student who is still learning more about the specific ICT.
