Assignment#2 (due on Blog) • Create an avatar in Second Life , explore the environment, take a screenshot and share with class on blog. • Discuss with ELA teachers and list ways to incorporate Second Life in ELA instruction, applying the concepts of multimodality to the teaching of ELA. Watch Common Core for ELA and Literacy video and discuss your understanding of Common Core (one good paragraph). The Common Core is a set of standards that is used as a guide for students to achieve in core subjects that meets their expectations. The Common Core standards in the past varied from state to state and later became a problem when the “No Child Behind” law held states accountable for their student’s education and if their expectations were met. When these same students would transfer to schools that were located in another state, some students had to take remedial courses because they were below that state’s expectations. The Common Core is broken into four categories: reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language with a scaffolding of college and career readiness anchor standards defining what kids should know and be ready to become successful in college and on the job.
