Understanding ELA Instruction

When is comes to the Reading portion of the Common Core standards grade 6-12, the teacher is responsible for covering two content area-specific sections which is English Language Arts and History/Social Studies, Science, and technical subjects. Each section follows the same Common Core Readiness Anchor Standards but grade specific standards are included. On the other hands, grades K-5 list standards for reading, writing, listening, and language across the curriculum and reflecting that most of the instruction comes from one teacher. The purpose of this course EDLA 615 is to learn how to incorporate technology towards teaching and learning while following the guidelines for the Common Core Standards. One the key features of the standards is reading, which covers the text complexity and the ability to comprehend and the application to comprehension that can be used in the real world. With this key feature of reading, students develop the skills of reading from simple to complex text and the increasing complexity that rises overtime from beginning to college and career readiness reading. 

When it comes to the writing portion of the key features of the standards, this portion focuses on the text types, responding to text, and research. There are different writing skills that’s have to be developed overtime which includes the ability to plan, revise, edit, publish argumentative writing types, explanatory text, and narratives. In addition, writing-reading connection is important to cover by requiring students to anaylize and provide textual evidence from literary and informational text.  

With the speaking and listening portion of the Common Core key features, this portion focuses on flexible communication and collaboration which includes skills for formal presentations. These skills are necessary for formal presentations and to develop useful oral communication and interpersonal skills. In this feature students must work together, listen and express their ideas, integrate information from text, media, oral, visual, and quantitative displays to achieve communicative purposes. In this case students can use audio to create podcast or story telling using communicative skills and by integrating technology oral and visual media sources can be useful to produce communicative skills.
            
The last feature of the standards if the language, whereas this portion focuses on conventions, effective use, and vocabulary. When it comes to integrating technology in this section, there are electronics that are useful in enhancing the skills of students when it comes to their vocabulary. The vocabulary standards focuses on understanding words and phrases, their relationships, and their nuances and on learning new vocabulary.
